The Modern Square, Internet Links, etc.
The Modern Square
This page was last updated on Jan. 17, 2021. The Modern Square is the ASSDF's publication, containing reports from the various square and round dance clubs and organizations across Arkansas...as well as information on upcoming special dances. The ASSDF, and your fellow square and round dancers THANK YOU in advance for your support, and subscription. You can also sign up or renew your print subscription at a Subscription Dance, noted elsewhere on this page.
Print Subscriptions to The Modern Square are $20 per year. On average, for every 10 Reminder Cards about subscriptions that are sent out, only 2 come back for renewal. Sooner or later, it won't be worth printing anymore. I know that those who don't have, can't get, or don't want, a computer or internet access, aren't happy...but this is the fact of the matter...especially considering that the number of those getting the free e-Edition is twice the number of print subscribers, who pay $20 a year for their print subscription...and there are some who are getting the print edition by itself (no e-Edition).
Note that all items for publication (club reports, articles, ads, etc.). must be on the Editors Desk by the 14th of the month, preceding the month of issue. Letters To The Editor must be signed, but names will be withheld upon request. Club Reports are LIMITED to 250 words, and the Editor may edit/condense, delete, or rewrite all items submitted. Club Reports that are late getting to the Editor, are places on the websites. Regardless, it will need to be readable (I nearly flunked handwriting in first grade due to poor penmanship).
Advertising rates for The Modern Square are as follows, per insertion. These are subject to change without notice. Advance Payment Required.
Due to print costs, effective immediately, the ASSDF must charge $35 for any ads that increases the print page edition past the 16 page maximum. Therefore, all ads, no matter the size, are $35 per month, for the print edition. In addition, to cover the electronic communications (webhosting) cost, the cost for e-Edition ads are $5 per month.
To purchase an ad, send a check/money order, payable to ASSDF to the Treasurer (please be sure the check is signed), then ad copy to the Editor.
The e-Edition is available FREE OF CHARGE, by providing ones name and email address to the Editor. The email is NOT given out, or used for any other purpose...but is required to prove that it is a valid Email address. Links to back issues of the e-Edition (along with other internet links) are elsewhere on this page.
A comparison of the print edition, and the e-Edition, using the November, 2019 issue as a guide, are at the print edition link , and the e-Edition link -- you will need an appropriate PDF viewer to view/print the file(s).
Now, I can already hear the howls of protest from those who can't get, don't have, or don't want a computer or internet access...let alone a smartphone. That may be their choice, but you're lucky to get 1 meal out for 2 people for $20. However, if you don't get on the Technology Train at the depot, you're going to be left behind in the dust; not to mention "you can't get something for nothing". As science fiction writer Robert Heinlein noted, TANSTAFFL -- there ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Many other publications, newspapers, etc. have had to go "online only", because of the same issues facing the ASSDF (the rising postage and printing costs, and the decline in subscribers and ads). The bottom line is, no one is taking out subscriptions or ads.
The February, 2021 issue e-Edition was released on Jan. 16, 2021, and sent to the printer. Note that some e-Edition subscriptions have bounced back as undeliverable. If you don't get your copy, you can download back issues at the links below. Work on the March, 2021 issue will start around Jan. 29, 2021.
Subscription Dances are where one can sign up for, or renew, their print edition subscription to The Modern Square. These are held at regular club dances, with ASSDF Officers at a separate table. With yours truly as Editor, I will try to make each of these dances, weather and health permitting...as I will have the subscriber databases for both the print edition and the e-Edition. So, if you have a question, you can ask me at these dances.

E-Editions of The Modern Square
Note that you will need an appropriate PDF reader to view or print the e-Edition. Note that if you are on dial-up internet instead of DSL or broadband (or in "a fringe internet coverage area"), it will take some time to download the file(s).
Former Editor Fred Fisher, started an e-Edition in April, 2015. Unfortunately, an e-Edition is NOT AVAILABLE before that time.
The advantage of getting an e-Edition are:
1) It is delivered via email at least 2 weeks prior to the print edition being delivered. If the print edition has to eventually be discontinued, the e-Edition will continue to be available.
2) All the pictures submitted are in color.
3) All of the links are clickable.
To obtain the e-Edition, the individual must send an email, with their name and email address to the Editor...that is the ONLY USE of that address -- it is NOT given out, or used for any other purpose...because the Editor needs that to know that it is A VALID EMAIL ADDRESS, and they need to know WHO it is. In some cases, there are several email, but have no idea who the individuals are. They are the ones that have the e-Edition Subscriber Database (growing by the month).
