The Modern Square

This page was last updated on Oct. 31, 2019. The Modern Square is the ASSDF's publication, containing reports from the various square and round dance clubs and organizations across Arkansas...as well as information on upcoming special dances. The ASSDF, and your fellow square and round dancers THANK YOU in advance for your support, and subscription. You can also sign up or renew your print subscription at a Subscription Dance, noted elsewhere on this page.

Print Subscriptions to The Modern Square are $20 per year. It had originally been published monthly since its inception. However, due to a continuing decrease in the number of subscribers and ads each month...combined with the continuing increase in both postage and printing costs each issue, the frequency of publication had been reduced to quarterly. But, with going to a smaller size (6 to 7 pages), double sided, and the ASSDF pays the postage, it will return to monthly, starting in February, 2020 , and Daryl Stout will be the new Editor.

Note that all items for publication (club reports, articles, ads, etc.). must be on the Editors Desk by the 5th of the month, preceding the month of issue. Letters To The Editor must be signed, but names will be withheld upon request. Club Reports are LIMITED to 250 words,  and the Editor may edit/condense, delete, or rewrite all items submitted. If the Club Reports get moved to the websites, the 250 word limit will be removed. However, it will need to be readable (I nearly flunked handwriting in first grade due to poor penmanship).

Advertising rates for The Modern Square are as follows, per insertion. Prices are higher for non-ASSDF members. These are subject to change without notice. Advance Payment  Required.

Full Page Ad: $25 for ASSDF Member Clubs, $35 for non-ASSDF members.
Half Page Ad: $12.50 for ASSDF Member Clubs, $20 for non-ASSDF members.
Back Cover Ad: $35 for ASSDF Member Clubs , $50 for non-ASSDF members.
Two Center Pages: $70 for ASSDF Member Clubs, $85 for non-ASSDF members.
All Other Ads: $7 for ASSDF Member Clubs, $10 for non-ASSDF members.

Booster Ads (for non-square dance related announcements): $10 (ASSDF Member Clubs Only)

Spotlight Ads (spotlight a caller, cuer, line dance instructor, dancer, or club): $15 (ASSDF Member Clubs Only)

To purchase an ad, send a check/money order, payable to ASSDF to the Treasurer, then ad copy to the Editor.

The e-Edition is available FREE OF CHARGE, by providing ones name and email address to the Editor. The email is NOT given out, or used for any other purpose...but is required to prove that it is a valid Email address. Links to back issues of the e-Edition (along with other internet links) are elsewhere on this page. Using the November, 2019 issue, here is a comparison of the print edition versus the e-Edition

-- you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view/print the file(s).

As noted, to keep the ASSDF from going bankrupt (as of Oct. 31, 2019, only 43 print subscriptions exist), the publication will change format, shrinking to 6 to 7 pages, printed double sided, and the ASSDF will pay the First Class Postage, effective with the February, 2020 issue. Items that basically remain the same will be moved to the websites. Those that change will be in both the print edition and the e-Edition...although space may limit what can be put in the smaller size print edition.

Now, I can already hear the howls of protest from those who can't get, don't have, or don't want a computer or internet access...let alone a smartphone. That may be their choice, but you're lucky to get 1 meal out for 2 people for $20. However, if you don't get on the Technology Train at the depot, you're going to be left behind in the dust; not to mention "you can't get something for nothing".  As science fiction writer Robert Heinlein noted, TANSTAFFL -- there ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Many other publications, newspapers, etc. have had to go "online only", because of the same issues facing the ASSDF (the rising postage and printing costs, and the decline in subscribers and ads). The bottom line is, no one is taking out subscriptions or ads.

Subscription Dances

Subscription Dances are where one can sign up for, or renew, their print edition subscription to The Modern Square. These are held at regular club dances, with ASSDF Officers at a separate table. With yours truly as Editor (as of Jan. 1, 2020), I will try to make each of these dances, weather and health permitting...as I will have the subscriber databases for both the print edition and the e-Edition. So, if you have a question, you can ask me at these dances.

E-Editions of The Modern Square

Note that you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view or print the e-Edition. Note that if you are on dial-up internet instead of DSL or broadband (or in "a fringe internet coverage area"), it will take some time to download the file(s).

Former Editor Fred Fisher, started an e-Edition in April, 2015. Unfortunately, an e-Edition is NOT AVAILABLE before that time.

The advantage of getting an e-Edition are:

1) It is delivered via email at least 2 weeks prior to the print edition being delivered. If the print edition has to eventually be discontinued, the e-Edition will continue to be available.

2) All the pictures submitted are in color.

3) All of the links are clickable.

To obtain the e-Edition, the individual must send an email, with their name and email address to the Editor...that is the ONLY USE of that address -- it is NOT given out, or used for any other purpose...because the Editors need that to know that it is A VALID EMAIL ADDRESS, and they need to know WHO it is. In some cases, they have several email addresses, but have no idea who the individual is. They are the ones that have the e-Edition Subscriber Database (growing by the month).
